my Notes on sewing

Finally started to learn sewing. beginning with hand stitching it is important to know how to hand stitch because it can be more accurate then a sewing machine at times. Also, as a beginner it makes it easier to make straight lines under the machine.

For large production amounts being cut, it is wise to use a pattern that acts as a guide to re-size material before sewing together.

when hand stitching always have your right hand with needle and lift up and pull string. Use your left hand to steady the material, make lines straight and to make spacing in-between sewing a similar size. Make sure the thread is not too long and do not double. Knot the thread and pass it through the back of material to start. To finish pass the needle through the last sew.
Seam finish - learn to do by hand can become useful before moving onto machine. Do a rough sew to hold in place the material. then start the seam finish. Fold over the material at a slant towards the left take a small amount under the fold then a small amount of materiel over the fold and continue, Use left finger to guide. Try not to show thread on the other side of material for a good finish.

when cutting out the pattern fold in half and start with the neck line then from shoulder to the arm cut. make the top of the shoulder slightly rounded to match the shape of a human shoulder. When sewing always go in at the sides of the waist then cut off the remains and seam finish. Sew tops of shoulders first to hold material in place remember to sew inside-out, then sew the sides. Normally a tailor would sew this for you. It is better to have all the sides already seam finished before the hole item is sewn together.
